Who took the Mary out of Christmas?

Images of Mary are everywhere - a meek, docile paragon of motherhood, setting an impossible unrealizable standard for women.  For centuries Mary has been portrayed as a passive selfless vessel with little to no autonomy.

But what if her historical role has been downplayed? And what can she teach us about curiosity, consent, and courage?

“Who Took the Mary Out of Christmas?” invites you into a powerful reimagining — a reckoning with the myth we’ve inherited about women and compliance, and a celebration of the Mary we’ve forgotten. The one who questioned empire. The one who believed something new could be born through her. The one who chose — not because she had to, but because it was a full body yes.

On November 25, I’ll be unveiling my newest Garden of Even installation: Mary. The paragon of curiosity, consent, and courage.

Join us with Kathryn Marshall from Marshall Law as we explore women’s AGENCY, CURIOSITY, CONSENT, and COURAGE to uncover a new way to step into ourselves.
